IAN CAMERON is a performer, director and visual artist.
He trained in painting at Central School of Art and Design in London, in classical mime with Desmond Jones, and in other theatre studies with such teachers as Jacques Lecoq, Phillipe Gaulier, Monique Pagneaux, Pierre Byland, Enrique Pardo, Steve Paxton, Odin Theatre and Theatre du Mouvement.
He has formed three theatre companies, Intriplicate Mime Theatre (1979-85) with Mollie Guilfoyle and Robert Williams, one of the foremost mime companies at that time, Two By One, with Micheline Vanderpoel, directed by Jos Houben (Théâtre de Complicité), and Plutôt La Vie formed in 2003 with Tim Licata.
As a freelance performer he has worked with such companies as the English National Opera in Harrison Birtwhistle's 'The Mask of Orpheus'; the LondonSinfonietta in de Falla's 'Master Peter's Puppet Show', conductor Simon Rattle; in pantomime at the King's Theatre, Edinburgh; toured Canada and Britain as a puppeteer with the Montreal puppet company Theatre Sans Fil; and in various productions with Catherine Wheels Theatre including the multi-award winning 'White' (Fringe First, Herald Angel, Total Theatre Award, CATS Award and more) as performer/co-creator, and in the award winning 'Voice Thief' (CATS Award) as performer/co-creator. With 'White' he has toured the world extensively. He also performed in and co-created Magnetic North's award winning production 'A Walk at the Edge of the World', directed by Nicholas Bone, and performed in Mark Storor's co-production with the Royal Manchester Exchange Theatre, 'Little Sister'. He is also a member of In-the-Making-Collective, an experimental dance company based in Edinburgh.
He has been a director/co-creator for Triangle of Coventry, 'The Dig' won an Edinburgh Festival Fringe First in 1992; Quicksilver, London; Puppet Lab; Clydebuilt Puppet Company; Shona Reppe ('Cinderella' won a Total Theatre Award in the 2002 Edinburgh Festival); 'Black Beauty' (CATS Award) and 'Stick by Me', co-created with Andy Manley for Red Bridge Arts. He co-directed 'Our Fathers' a co-production with Magnetic North and the Traverse Theatre
For the last twenty years he worked as a part time theatre practitioner with the arts in health organisation 'Hearts and Minds' as a Clowndoctor/Elderflower in children's hospitals and hospices, with elderly people with alzheimers/dementia, and with young people with mental health difficulties.
Ian Cameron has had a wide experience as a teacher of theatre practice ranging from schools, universities, drama colleges and community groups to the English National Opera.
